Determination of elemental composition of substances by Scanning Electronic Microscope (SEM/EDS)

Feb 11, 2019

The new acquired TESCAN VEGA 3 scanning electron microscope (SEM) coupled with an energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) allows identification of fibers and determination of the number of asbestos fibers in the air – (see news from 10. January 2019), and moreover its configuration is also suitable for observing and analyzing the structure of material surfaces.

Using the EDS detector, it is possible to determine semi-quantitative elemental composition of the observed sample or particle. As examples, this procedure is very useful for estimating

  • the elemental composition of unknown accumulations on the surface of pipes, equipment, heat exchange surfaces (exchangers)
  • the elemental composition of insoluble materials in solution even in very small quantities.

Another application of the scanning electronic microscope enables the determination of particle size on any surfaces and the possible quantification of these particles.
