Overview
HBCD is/was primarily used as a flame retardant in polystyrene foam but was also applied for the same purposes to textiles, packaging material and electronic appliances.
The compound is included in the list of “Substances of Very High Concern” (SVHC) and only a limited number of application is allowed in the EU today. HBCD is also listed in Annex A under the Stockholm convention awaiting elimination, however with certain exemption.
Toxicity
HBCD is classified as toxic and as an endocrine disruptor. It has not designated in terms of its carcinogenicity
